Informational Meetings on: The Self-Sufficiency Standard for New York

How much do New Yorkers need to earn to meet all their basic needs? How can subsidies help?

The Self-Sufficiency Standard for New York is the thirteenth state in a series of such standards, developed by Dr. Diana Pearce. The Self-Sufficiency Standard shows how much is enough for families to meet their basic needs. It covers costs for housing, child care, food, transportation, medical care, miscellaneous expenses, and taxes. It also shows benefits from tax credits.

The Standard varies by county (particularly for housing and child care) and by family type (e.g. a single mother with one infant vs. a two-parent family with teenagers). The Standard also shows the impact of public and private subsidies.

Members of the steering committee will be conducting informational forums across the state on the findings of the report and how the Standard may be used in local areas. Local policy makers, decision makers, and senior staff may benefit from this fresh look at what constitutes self-sufficiency for families residing in your locality.
