Fiscal Policy Institute Reacts to Governor Cuomo’s State of the State Address

FPI Agrees that New Yorkers Deserve Results, Not Rhetoric

Statement from Ron Deutsch, Executive Director, Fiscal Policy Institute

“Governor Cuomo is right that New Yorkers deserve results, not rhetoric. While our state economy booms, we continue to be short-changed by austerity budgeting. Missing from the governor’s State of the State address is clarity on closing the budget gap and meeting our state’s pressing needs. The answer is added revenues, which must come from requiring multi-national corporations and the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay their fair share in taxes.

We welcome Governor Cuomo’s embrace of our call to strengthen the Empire State Child Credit to help families with young children. This is a step forward, but we can do more by strengthening the Earned Income Tax Credit to boost the incomes of struggling New Yorkers and local economies. The Fiscal Policy Institute looks forward to working with our allies and colleagues, Governor Cuomo, and the state legislature to create a just and equitable tax system that works for all New Yorkers.”

The Fiscal Policy Institute is a nonpartisan, nonprofit research and education organization committed to improving public policies and private practices to better the economic and social conditions of all.
