What New York’s Community Organizations Need To Know About Public Charge

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security publicized a proposed Public Charge rule that would punish immigrants going through official immigration processes and their families for applying for or receiving government benefits for which they are legally eligible. This would take away vital government assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, and housing assistance from low-income immigrant families, including U.S. citizen children. Denying access to basic needs programs will decimate their health and well-being.

Once the proposed rule change is published, there will be a 60-day period for the public to leave comments. The Fiscal Policy Institute and our partners at Hunger Solutions New York, the New York Immigration Coalition, and the Empire Justice Center will host a one hour long webinar on Monday November 19th at 11:00AM. The webinar will cover what the current public charge rule is, how it is changing, what you can do to impact the rule making, and how to talk with your clients who may be impacted along with providing resources and other tools for community organizations.

Speakers will include:

  • Dawn Secor, SNAP Policy Specialist, Hunger Solutions New York
  • Claudia Calhoon, Senior Director of Immigrant Integration Policy, The New York Immigration Coalition
  • Melissa Krug, Poverty Analyst, Fiscal Policy Institute
  • Saima Akhtar, Senior Staff Attorney, Empire Justice Center

Slides and a recording of the webinar will be available after the event, so even if you cannot attend, you should sign up to gain access to the materials. If you have any further questions regarding the webinar, please email Melissa Krug at [email protected].
